Bidirectional energy meter

Bidirectional energy meter illustration

What is a bidirectional energy meter?

A bidirectional energy meter (import-export meter, net meter) measures the energy drawn from the grid and the energy fed into the grid separately. In solar PV systems it records how much electricity the building uses and how much surplus it exports.

Where is a bidirectional meter used?

It is used at homes, businesses, factories and farms with grid-tied solar PV systems. Net metering and feed-in calculations are based on the values this meter records.

Connection and selection

The meter is connected between the grid and the installation; one side faces the grid, the other the installation and the inverter output. There are single- and three-phase, direct-connected and CT-connected models. The meter type and installation are usually set by the distribution company's requirements.

What to watch out for

The meter's input and output direction must be connected correctly; a reversed connection records the readings wrongly. The meter is sealed, and connections and changes are made by authorized staff of the distribution company.
