AC-DC power supply (24 V)

What is an AC-DC power supply?
An AC-DC power supply (DC power supply, SMPS) converts the AC voltage from the mains into the DC voltage needed by control circuits. The most common output in control panels is 24 V DC. It mounts on a DIN rail and has a light that shows the output is on.
Where is an AC-DC power supply used?
It supplies PLCs, sensors, relays with DC coils, operator panels (HMI) and industrial electronic devices. It is found in almost every automation panel.
Types and selection
There are single-phase and three-phase input models. The output voltage (12 V, 24 V, 48 V) and output current or power are chosen for the total consumption of the devices it supplies. On most models the output voltage can be fine-tuned with a trimmer.
What to watch out for
Choose a supply rated somewhat higher than the total current of all the devices it feeds. Use a fuse or electronic protection on the output side as well. Leave space above and below for ventilation; an overheating supply has a shorter life.
